Forgotten Nickelodeon Shows From The 90s

While channel surfing from my couch over the weekend, I some how stopped on Nickelodeon. While the majority of the shows that are on Nick now are complete crap, my short viewing did bring back fond memories of the shows that were on when I was a kid. Everyone remembers Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, but I thought I would list a few of the forgotten shows from the 90's Nickelodeon era.

1. Roundhouse (1992-1996)

(image from: nickroundhouse.tumblr.com)

Each episode starred the "Anyfamily" and discussed their problems about daily life in a humorous way. After the problems were resolved a member of the cast would say, "Reprise the theme song and roll the credits." There was plenty of singing and dancing throughout the show.

Roundhouse lasted for 4 seasons and was apart of the original SNICK lineup on Saturday nights.

2. Aaahh!!! Real Monsters (1994-1997)

This show tells about the adventures of three young monsters (Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm) who attends a monster school. They constantly get in trouble with the high-heel wearing headmaster (The Gromble).

Aaahh!! Real Monsters lasted for 4 seasons.

3. Salute Your Shorts (1991-1992)

Salute Your Shorts is a show about teenage campers (most memorably Donkeylips) and their strict counselor (Ug) at Camp Anawanna. The show highlights their crazy misadventures and the many pranks that were pulled at the camp.

This awesome show only lasted 2 seasons.

Do you have any fond memories of watching these shows? Maybe some other ones that I did not mention? Please tell me in a comment below!

Movie Review: To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)

(Starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, John Liguizamo, Stockard Channing, and Chris Penn)

This is a light-hearted and very entertaining movie about two drag queens, Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) and Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze) who both win the crown at a drag queen pageant in New York City. They win the chance to compete in the Drag Queen of America pageant in Hollywood, CA. There they befriend Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Liguizamo), who is an inexperienced and naive "drag princess". Vida and Noxeema decide to cash in their plane tickets to Hollywood and buy an old Cadillac, so they can take Chi-Chi cross-country with them.

Their cross-country trip leads them on an adventure that they never even dreamed of having. After a run in with the racist and homophobic sheriff Dollard (Chris Penn), their car breaks down outside of the small town Snydersville. Unfortunately, they have an extended stay in Snydersville until the part that they need for their car arrives. Here they meet a variety of people, including the abused and battered housewife Carol Ann (Stockard Channing). Trying to make the best of their situation, they befriend the townspeople and they deal with personal issues that they can no longer escape. Little do they know that Sheriff Dollard is just a few steps behind them and hot on their trail.

I absolutely adore this movie! Patrick Swayze looks pretty good in drag (just my opinion though). This is a light-hearted, bubble-gum type movie with good values in it and is definitely worth a watch.

Favorite Quotes from To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar:

Miss Chi-Chi Rodriguez: I'm the Latina Marilyn Monroe. I've got more legs than a bucket of chicken!
Vida Boheme: Now she's gonna get herself kidnapped by some mountain man and we will have to rescue her.

Sheriff Dollard: [to the other cops] Shut up! Just shut up! I'm gonna bring back three corpses here! And when you look up their dresses, if you don't find something you shouldn't find, I don't know what!

Noxeema Jackson: Little Latin boy in drag, why are you crying?
Miss Chi-Chi Rodriguez: It's just cause the two of you are so pretty, you know. You're so pretty.
Vida Boheme: Yes, of course we're pretty, but why are you crying?
Noxeema Jackson: Maybe she just found out Menudo broke up.

Overall, I rate this movie a 4.5/5!

Music: Tim Curry's "Paradise Garage" (1979)

I have had "Paradise Garage" stuck in my head all day and I thought I would share the music video with you. This song is from his Fearless (1979) album, that includes these rockin' tunes:

Right On The Money
Hide This Face
I Do The Rock
S.O.S.
Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire
Paradise Garage
No Love On The Street
Something Short Of Paradise
Charge It

Oh...that voice! *Just a side note * If you pause it at 1:39, you will see a reference to Rocky Horror.

Movie Review: Shag: The Movie (1989)

(Starring Phoebe Cates, Bridget Fonda, Annabeth Gish, Page Hannah, Tyrone Power Jr., Scott Coffey, and Robert Rusler)

Get ready to put on your dancing shoes and shag the night away. Shag: The Movie is a lighthearted coming-of-age story of four friends who escape to Myrtle Beach for one final adventure in the summer of 1963.

Carson McBride (Phoebe Cates) is an inexperienced, but sweet girl who is about to marry uptight Harley Ralston (Tyrone Power, Jr.), a tobacco executive's son. Her friends Melaina Buller (Bridget Fonda), a preacher's daughter who dreams of becoming Miss Sun Queen and moving to Hollywood; Caroline "Pudge" Carmichael (Annabeth Gish), who just wants to dance and find true love; and uptight Luanne Clatterbuck (Page Hannah), a wealthy senator's daughter; take Carson to Myrtle Beach to enjoy their last days together before the girl's move on to college and married life.

The girls catch the attention of two local boys, Buzz Ravenel (Robert Rusler) and Chip Guillyard (Scott Coffee). Buzz is a handsome boy who's come-ons annoy Carson. Chip is an aspiring marine and an awesome shagger. Little does the girls know that this weekend will be filled with romance, shagging, and decisions that may change their lives forever.

I think that this is a wonderful summer movie filled with a lot of 60's beach goodness. This movie makes me want to put on my Bermuda shorts, rock a bubble flip hairdo, and go shagging on the beach (wish I knew how!)

Favorite Quotes From Shag:

Luanne: If I'm not engaged by the time I'm twenty, I'm gonna kill myself.

Buzz: Well, don't play hard to get. You might miss something.

Carson: You want me to go all the way up there, to a Yankee school, just so I can come over every weekend and practice "free love" with you?
Buzz: Well, not every weekend.

Overall, I rate this movie 5/5!
